Exhibition piece for the second Interim Show....

For my exhibition piece for the second groups interim show, I spoke with my curator Beth, and worked out what I should show. She really liked my purple maquette screen prints, and I wanted to try and project an image as I recently started to print on acetate and it was an idea given to me in a past tutorial. I decided to print the image of my gender symbol maquette on clear acetate, making sure to edit it to look as purple as possible as the original image was black and white.  We had discussed experimenting with both a modern projector and a classic overhead projector. Personally I wanted to use the classic overhead projector as I had used them before, and I like the effect it gives. Also, it's a nice contrast to the modern context of the image. We tried both, and we both agreed that the classic overhead projector would work best, as it gave a really soft look to the image, and the purple wasn't too strong, nor was it ...

Interim Show.....

Following the initial discussions of the interim shows, we arranged roles for everyone, my role was mainly communications - forwarding messages, helping to organise meetings, making sure people were coming in to give in their work and answer any questions. We also had a documentation team; Filip & Oliver, publication team; Aurelia, Iyesha & Jack D, an install team; Nayeon & Jack A, who mainly made sure that works which were to be mounted onto a wall got the required mountings sorted, and the plinths booked out and a labelling team; Molly. The rest helped with advertising, documentation, install and communications.  When we were happy with the confirmed works, I made a plan of the space - PS2 and made sure to arrange works in a way that would use up as much space as possible, but the works do not class with each other too much. I made sure to place the paper pieces together, and tried to separate the paintings as each were of different sizes...

More Photoshop experiments.....

I was told to work on creating an acetate of my purple screen print ready for projection for the interim shows, and this required me to change the colours of my black and white version to purple in photoshop. After doing this I decided to experiment with my image and overlay different floral backgrounds on top of it. I also had to play around with the vibrance and contrast to get the colours to look as bold and bright as possible, and I also wanted to choose the effect that allowed most of the image to be covered by the floral backgrounds. I felt that these were interesting pieces by themselves, and have thought about printing them onto some photo paper and turn these into prints and final pieces.  I also decided to add text on some of them as I felt that this would be a good link back to my work and project ideas. I tried to get the text to overlap the image but also make the text slightly transparent so you could see the image underneath. I tried to use t...

Painting an object......

While shopping for a dustpan and brush I came across these - bejewelled and decorated dustpan and brushes. I felt that these were kind of sexist as it would make it seem as if women were the only ones who buy these household objects thus saying that women do the housework. These as well as my stitching pieces, inspired me to paint onto an object, more specifically a dustpan and brush. I wanted to go back to a fine art practice as I had been exploring activist art and thus creating artwork in said theme. I wanted to use the same kind of text and imagery that I had been using, but rather than print onto the object I wanted to paint onto it. I first painted the object white using white emulsion. I wanted a nice, even base colour, and wanted it to be a paintable surface. It took few layers for it to become even and thick enough for me to start painting onto it. After the paint had fully dried, I started to paint motifs along the object - I p...

More stitching......

I wanted to continue with stitching and wanted to introduce some other materials along with the text. I used some fabric flowers and pulled the petals off and overstitched them onto the apron and bag. I chose these specific flowers as I felt that they were simple to stitch on, and the colours wouldn't contrast with the colour of the thread. I also stitched on the text this time, rather than stitching on printed text. I doubled up the thread and went over it a couple of times to make sure the text is clear enough and bold enough to be read. I also quite liked using different shades of the same colour within the text as it adds some dimension to the text.  I think this will be the last of the stitching for now. I feel that I have enough to be play around with. I think if I were to exhibit something from my work it would be the hand stitched pieces as they look really effective together. If I were to carry on with this I would start to move ...
