For my exhibition piece for the second groups interim show, I spoke with my curator Beth, and worked out what I should show. She really liked my purple maquette screen prints, and I wanted to try and project an image as I recently started to print on acetate and it was an idea given to me in a past tutorial. I decided to print the image of my gender symbol maquette on clear acetate, making sure to edit it to look as purple as possible as the original image was black and white.
We had discussed experimenting with both a modern projector and a classic overhead projector. Personally I wanted to use the classic overhead projector as I had used them before, and I like the effect it gives. Also, it's a nice contrast to the modern context of the image. We tried both, and we both agreed that the classic overhead projector would work best, as it gave a really soft look to the image, and the purple wasn't too strong, nor was it too desaturated. The more modern projector was too high in contrast and the purple was too strong in colour.
I also titled my work 'Womanhood' as I felt it represented the image really well as it's a symbol representing the female sex and my aim was to make other women feel proud to be a woman by showing the symbol on a big scale, in a public place. It also worked well with my own practice and themes.
My work was then displayed in PS2, alongside Filip's on the opposite wall as his was based on the same theme as mine - Pride. Overall, I really loved how this looked, and think I will add this to my pieces. I think the symbol projected onto the wall is similar to the branding idea that came up in one of my other tutorials, and it also changes the space as well. We also talked about how it would also be interactive as people can walk past it and disrupt the image, further changing it's impact. I think if I had the time, I would experiment further with this medium, and try to push myself out side of my comfort zone.
