As well as Anteros, I'm helping to organise another exhibition in relation to the ARTAGRAM exhibition that we did near the end of BA2a. For this exhibition we decided to explore the idea of commercialism, and what is considered art. We are using the gallery space as a pop shop instead, and will be creating products that we will hopefully sell. The products that we hope to sell include t-shirts, prints, postcards, sculptures, craft pieces and so on.
For the initial stages, we have been brainstorming designs for the name of the exhibition, postcards and the initial poster designs and colour scheme. For the postcards, I made some designs based off of my practice - using feminist slogans and gender symbols. I stuck to the same colour scheme of pinks, whites and teal - which are going to be the main colours
used in our publication. I experimented with different effects on the text, used the same techniques that I used for previous digital works. I also decided to include one of my digital designs for the 'definition' postcard, as I felt that it would be a good way of linking my work to the exhibition. I'm going to design one more postcard with the title of the exhibition being repeated, and using the same colour scheme as the other postcards - teal, pink & white.
For the title, we came up with SELLOUT. We chose this name as we felt that it related well to 'selling out' to the idea if what is art. It seemed very commercial as well, which is the main theme of the exhibition. This was the initial title that came up as a general idea, but we ended liking the sound of it and stuck with it.
In the last unit, I did begin to have an interest in commercialism and feminism, as I had been looking at the idea of craft (e.g. embroidery, textiles etc). For this unit and exhibition I hope to look further into the idea of craft and linking back to feminism and text. As well as the postcards, I also hope to exhibit some embroidery pieces that include symbols and text, and possibly a quilt of fabric with patches stitched on top. But I intend to research and brainstorm ideas around these pieces to gain a clearer idea of what I intend to do.
Things to do next:
*research into craft
*brainstorm slogans for t-shirts
*brainstorm textile pieces for exhibiting
