INTERCHANGE: Long Exposure, Pinhole Photography

The second workshop that I chose was Long Exposure Digital Pinhole photography. I chose this workshop because I have always had an interest in photography, and this is one area that I have no experience in.  It was also interesting learning more about the different settings on the camera and how each setting effects the overall image. This is something that I think I'm going to take forward when photographing work, and possibly other subjects.  To create the pinhole we took a lens cap with a drilled hole and and a piece of aluminium can. We pierced a hole in the piece of can, placed a piece of dark film over the pierced aluminium can and stuck both over the lens cap. We then placed the pin hole lens cap on to the camera with out the main lens. This allows us to play with the exposure with the sensor and create interesting images. Plus the pin hole is the aperture that we are restricted to.  The overall photos were really interesting, although it was difficult trying t...

INTERCHANGE: Japanese Book Binding....

For the first workshop of the interchange event I chose to do Japanese book binding. I thought it would be good to learn a new skill, and after creating the books, I thought I could use these in our SELLOUT exhibition. There are 3 main types of Japanese book binding; Yotsume Toji (four hole) binding, Kikko Toji (tortoise shell) binding and Asa-No-Ha Toji (hemp leaf) binding. I chose the four hole binding and the tortoise shell binding. The first stages of Japanese book binding involve folding sheets of Japanese paper in half. We folded 20 sheets of paper in half to create 40 pages. We then flattened them down with a bone tool, covering the folded pages with photocopier paper before doing so. After the folded sheets were flattened, we collated them together, cut another sheet of paper to the size of the pages, which would be then be stuck to the cover later on in the process. Once the backing of the cover and the pages are all aligned, we then measured out the margin for th...

BA2b - SELLOT Exhibition: Planning and designs....

As well as Anteros, I'm helping to organise another exhibition in relation to the ARTAGRAM exhibition that we did near the end of BA2a. For this exhibition we decided to explore the idea of commercialism, and what is considered art. We are using the gallery space as a pop shop instead, and will be creating products that we will hopefully sell. The products that we hope to sell include t-shirts, prints, postcards, sculptures, craft pieces and so on. For the initial stages, we have been brainstorming designs for the name of the exhibition, postcards and the initial poster designs and colour scheme. For the postcards, I made some designs based off of my practice - using feminist slogans and gender symbols. I stuck to the same colour scheme of pinks, whites and teal - which are going to be the main colours  used in our publication. I experimented with different effects on the text, used the same techniques that I used for previous di...

BA2b - Womanist Society Collaboration....

As well as the SELLOUT exhibition, I'm curating an exhibition in collaboration with the Womanist Society. I decided to do this after talking to another student about future projects. I felt that my practice relates well with the society, and it would be good to work with other students from other courses. In this project I have a students from textiles, fashion and fine art. I will also exhibit myself, but my work will not be as big as the others, as I want to be more of a curator for this project rather than both curator and exhibitor.  I also wanted to do this as a society event for International Women's Day. I felt that helping the society by doing an event like this would also help towards to work-related learning as I'm liaising with a group to create something big. The exhibitors I have are: Alice Hunt - Fashion design student, specialising in conceptual women's wear. She will be exhibiting crotch-less  lace up trousers, with furry un...

BA2b - Anteros Exhibition....

The second project that I worked on within BA2b was the group exhibition at Anteros Arts Foundation. The work that I submitted to be shown were my aprons and some of the photographs showing these pieces being worn in context. I chose these pieces as I felt that these were my most developed pieces of work, and combined most of the elements that I had been looking at throughout BA2a - text and imagery. I was originally going to frame the photographs as these were mainly for documentation and to give the textile pieces context. However, it was suggested that I print the photographs onto another surface. I wasn't really sure what surface to print on, and I didn't have a lot of time to sort things out as I was filming for the collaboration project the next day, so I decided to print the photographs on canvas paper. I chose this material as I liked the idea of having them still fabric based and have some sort of materiality to them. Thi...

BA2b - Course Collaboration Project....

For the first part of BA2b we had to do a cross course collaboration project which involved working with VFX and Games Art & Design to create a pre-50s public information video. After the initial lecture, we went away as group and brainstormed different ideas. We also looked at examples of public info films of the decade in particular and we eventually got the idea to do a film based on how to survive a nuclear bombing but with a twist - the main character will be making a cup of tea and hiding under a table. We thought this was ridiculous and would generate a few laughs. We then storyboarded the whole video, organised roles and set a date and time to film. The main story board The schedule  My role was to be the director of photography. I have a filming background as I did Media Studies back in Sixth Form, so I thought that would be the most suitable role for me. I was also in charge of getting the equipment ...
