As well as embroidery pieces I have done a small amount of screen printing within this unit. This was also a teaching session for fellow student Beth, who I'm working with for the 'SELLOUT' exhibition. Beth wanted to do some prints for the show as she hasn't done printmaking yet, and has been solely focused on sculpture. I decided to help guide her as well as create some screen prints for the show as well.
I chose an image which was inspired by a previous screen print design, which was text based with a floral background edited into the text through photoshop. I used the same techniques and same text but a different background. I wanted to do something with the gender symbol as that has become a staple image within my work, but also works well with the aesthetics of the show. I created a repeating symbol background with a pink gender symbol repeated, on a teal background. I chose pink and teal as they were the main colours used for the marketing of the show and thought it would be appropriate.
It had been a while since I had done screen printing and so wasn't expecting many good prints, however I did get one good print, and the rest were slightly distorted. At first I wasn't overly happy with them, but then after a while and once I had placed the final layer on them, I began to like how distorted they got, as it seemed to be a progression - they started off perfect, and gradually got more and more distorted. This kind of works with our idea of creating products with no real purpose, so prints that aren't perfect fit really well.
I did contemplate doing more screen prints, but with the limited time we've had and with other things that needed sorting, I chose to keep it simple and stick to the ones done here. I do want to try and combine screen printing and embroidery at some point in the future, as it would be combining my two favourite mediums together, and it would be interesting combining two, very hands on processes together.
