This week was the set up and install of the ARTAGRAM Exhibition. This is a project that me and 3 other students (Beth, Kinga & Charlotte) have been working on for the last month. The main premise/idea behind the exhibition was to curate the entire thing via messages, but not using technology and finding different ways of sending messages such as using old receipts, shoes, pieces of metal, sound, recycled paper and so on. We would then display them in PS2 as artworks, and as an exploration of a lost method of communication.
For half of the letters we decided to hang the messages on string and have them dangle down the walls. We were inspired by the Royal Arcade in the city, and how they have the letters to Santa dangling down from garlands across the ceiling. We realised that we couldn't replicate this in our own way but we could alter it so that we could still have them hanging, just not from the ceiling. We also included plinths with objects on them, and a sound piece made from piece of metal which was given out as an object to use to create a message. We also decided to include a mirror on the opposite wall to reflect the letters back, so we could still keep them in this non-existent dimension. All of the elements seem to work together really well, and it didn't take us long to install which was impressive on our part.
I was initially concerned that we wouldn't have enough to display, but we ended up taking up an entire wall space and I think that what we have is quite enough. I think if we had too much on display, the audience would feel overwhelmed, and with the time frame we had and the scheduled sessions in between, we managed to get quite a bit done which was a relief. Overall I'm pleased with the exhibition, and I'm happy that it looks the way it does. We do have a group presentation about the exhibition on the 11th at 4pm, we organised this as we felt it would be more appropriate rather than having a 'private view'. We would be able to give more context about the exhibition, and really go in-depth with the curation side of things as well as the concept.
