After creating my first Lino, I decided to do another one, but this time on a slightly bigger scale as I was too comfortable on smaller scale plates. I also decided to go for a slightly simpler design than previous, by using female lips, and a speech bubble with the words 'Let's Talk Equality' across the top. I came to this design after a lot of brainstorming of slogans and possible imagery and I was inspired by the 'We Can Do It! imagery as well. I did want to add something else as there was a gap but after talking to a fellow student, they pointed out that they liked the simplicity of it, which is something that I also liked about it. I might make a screen print based on this image, but not so sure yet as I have so many other ideas that I'd like to try out, that I might have to come back to it and maybe refine the idea down.
Once I had done the initial prints, I decided to go back and print on top of different imagery - my collages, both image based and text based, plain text which was comprised of the many insults which are directed towards women, and some backgrounds from my screen prints. I also tried different colours, as well as the different images. I liked this pink colour the most as it was dark enough for the print to be nice and sharp but it is also very feminine, and relates to the feminist ideas that this design was derived from, and also the connotations of the colour pink contrast with the main image, as well as historically as men used to be dressed in pink, so with the text saying 'let's talk equality', it does highlight these areas.
I think I might display the simple colour on white paper prints as a series on a white wall just to see how effective they are, because as an image alone I feel these are very interesting and powerful. It doesn't suggest that it's pro women or pro men, only the lips do, but it's mostly down to viewer assumption and reading. This is something that I like to aim for as I don't want my art to be perceived as pro this or that, but rather it be open to assumption, but at the same time convey a message. I think out of the two Linos I definitely prefer this version, and I might make a poster out of this and put it out in the public space.
Things to do next:
*Make a poster out of this? - Place in public space?
*Develop further?
*Exhibit them? - documentation
