Carrying on from the lino and screen print prints, I decided to explore the idea of stitching and textiles. I was inspired when I went shopping in pound shop and discovered they were selling bejewelled dustpan and brushes. I felt that it was a little sexist and misogynistic as it felt as if they thought that men don't use these kind of utensils and that men don't do housework whereas the women. This obviously is not the case anymore as there are cases such as single fathers having to take on the roles of both the mother and the father, therefore including housework, and that objects should not be designed to attract either gender/sex.
I took this on board and decided to stitch my text screen prints of insults onto ladies' laundry aprons and a tea towel as a way to say that this seems to be ingrained into our lives and that we should start to make it clear that we aren't always the ones doing housework, that we shouldn't be restricted to such roles and that not all objects have genders or gender specific uses. I wanted to stitch them on as stitching used to be the only art form that women were allowed to do until the 1900's, when the shift in art started and that women started to become involved in art but not recognised as artists until way into the 60's/70's. During these times men were the ones seen as the artists, the gifted ones, the ones who were able to speak freely because of their perceived authority at the time.
I really liked how these came in the end, and was worried that they would look odd because of how I had stitched them as I haven't stitched and sewn in a long time. I'm definitely going to take this further and stitch lettering onto a product designed for women, and use some of the phrases that I have been working with. This is an interesting angle to look at, and it allows me to step away from print and start to make something from my prints that I can display in a creative way as well.
Things to do next:
*more stitching?
*different materials?
*different text?
*stitch on imagery?
*continue exploring theme?
