I decided to have a play around in photoshop after doing my paintings in my sketchbook. I really liked the idea of combining floral designs with the text as I liked the idea of combining positive and negative imagery together - positive imagery of flowers with the negative imagery of the text. It's a nice juxtaposition in a way and something that I might explore further within my project.
For the photoshop experiments I got a screen grab of the text that I had been working with and grabbed 3 floral backgrounds from google images. I then placed each image over the text one by one, playing with the different settings. I first used the Screen effect and I really liked how I could get the floral background in the text, it really obscured the text, making it difficult to read which is something that I was aiming for. It reminded me of Derek Jarman's work where he would paint colours onto a surface and then scratch in words, making them barely visible but you can just about read them at certain angles. This is something that I wanted to try out as I do focus a lot on text based imagery and I think this photoshop effect really captures that effect really well. I also played around with other effects such as Subtract, Multiply, Darken, Soft Light, and Hard Light. All of which were really interesting and different and changed the image completely from being a block of text to a possible work of art.
From these experiments, I have decided to take them further and make some screen prints of them. I have chosen to use CMYK and four colour separation as I'm using a lot of colours and I think this might give better effect than just having one colour in different shades. I might make posters out of these, and perhaps combine these with relief printing, or even collage, I'm not entirely sure yet. But I definitely think that this image will work really well as a screen print.
