This year I chose to do the automatic drawing workshop. I chose this one as I had started doing something similar last year, and I really enjoy just mindlessly drawing. It's a good way to get the creative juices flowing if you start to struggle with artists block, and it allows you to build on the images you create, helping to also develop your ideas as well as your skills.
My automatic drawings mainly consist of line drawings, however I did try to experiment with different materials and mark making. I used chunky graphite sticks, pen, pastels, and my finger to smudge the colours together. I tend to draw with with my eyes closed and just allow my hand to move the pen around the page, sometimes with the music. I really enjoyed this workshop, it allowed me to relax and just draw without worrying how it's going to look in the end, which is something that as art students we tend to think too much about, and tend to forget about enjoying the process of the drawing, painting etc. I think I'm gong to use this technique within my practice in the future, especially when I need to step back and recharge.
