While doing the text screen prints, I was inspired to look at collagraph printmaking. I had done this before in A Level Art & Year 0, and have always wanted to go back and experiment with it further. I had been looking at floral designs and so wanted to create an image based these designs, using card, wire, tissue paper on mount board. I managed to get a basic design down, and painted over it with thin washes of acrylic paint to make sure there wasn't any sticky residue left over from the pva glue. I was happy with this design, however I did feel it was slightly basic, and I do want to experiment with other materials in the future. Perhaps use actual flowers? Fake decorative flowers?
The prints came out better than I thought, and I had decided to combine the collagraph with my photo etch as I wanted to have the female gender symbol over a floral background much like my screen prints. The symbol didn't come out as strong as I had hoped. This could have been due to the light colours I was using over the stronger colours of the collagraph print. It was an interesting effect all the same, and it does remind me of the previous etching experiments I had done, where the image wasn't as clear but you could just about make it out, giving out this idea of the image of the woman is becoming non existent in some ways due to the overpowering patriarchy. So in this way they are successful, alternatively, I do want to experiment further with these prints and play around with colour.
Things to do next:
*experiment with colour
*different materials? - fake decorative flowers?
*move away from print?
*postcards?
