The first part of the Skills 6 PRINT workshop was Screen Print. This was no different to what we had done previously, the only difference being that I prepped the screen with the solution that allows the image to be placed onto the screen. I got my screen ready and prepped for printing the following week and came back to begin printing my image.
The images I chose to print were that of my mini maquette of the female gender symbol that I had made while exploring different ideas for my project. I also chose a floral background from google images. I thought these two images would go hand in hand as the background image relates well to the foreground image of the female gender symbol - connotations of femininity and possibly stereotypes? I was happy with how they came out, both images coming out clear and sharp, and I found it interesting seeing a 3D object printed as a 2D image, it takes away from it being an original, and becomes more of a multiple, looses that aura of originality - links to Walter Benjamin Essay?
I chose to use light, pastel colours as I felt because of the delicate nature of the object and the floral, feminine background, pastel colours would help to establish these themes and meanings. I also played around with a gradient for the background image, again using similar pastel colours. I did some screen prints of the two images separate, and then some of them together. I'm probably going to use the background image screen print for other things such as collage and/or printing on top of with my Lino print.
I have became really confident with myself this time around with screen print as last time I didn't feel comfortable doing it, and would rather stick to my comfort zone which was relief printing. However this year, I want to try and challenge myself and come out of my comfort zone and try new things. I also wanted to develop my skills in this form of printing. I'm definitely going to come back and screen print more of these images. Maybe experimenting with different colours? Different paper placement? Overlapping of images? More layers?

Things to do next:
*More screen printing! - experiment with colour/layers/placement & composition
*collage with screen prints? - paint?
*print on top of screen prints?
