I enjoyed screen printing more this year due to wanted to come out of my comfort zone, so decided to carry on with it, and develop my screen prints further. I wanted to experiment with layers and using different colours, and possibly print on top of images/text which was suggested in a group crit. I first played around with different colours, and did some more background prints using the floral image on my screen. I then started to play around with layers, starting with the same colour as I liked how the image became distorted once you start to add more layers. I then came back, and started to use different colours when overlapping, I chose a light blue and red as they seemed to work with the purple base colour (and blue + red = purple which is something that I didn't notice until afterwards!). I experimented with how far apart I wanted each image; first starting out quite close, and then starting to move them farther apart.
I did start to notice this idea of tearing ones self apart because of the colours I had used and the composition of these prints - the purple in the centre, and the two colours that make this colour either side of the purple, slowly separating. It reminded me of the stories of women who had their true selves torn apart because of how they had been treated whether it be through sexual abuse, rape or harassment. It ends up making these four prints a lot more powerful than I had first realised, and I really like the relationship between colour and image. I think this is something I want to explore further, perhaps through different print mediums or even collage.
I also really liked the close together images as they seem to look distorted, like you would see on a faulty screen or something. I think going ahead, I might use this image along side some text and see what happens then, as I really like this image. I don't think I'm going to use the background image anymore, purely because I have no need for it although I may keep it just in case, and I think that the main image of the maquette is a lot more stronger on it's own than when it has a background. Although, I might possibly experiment with a text background as part of my experimentation of text and imagery.
Things to do next:
*More screen prints? - adding text?
*Look into the relationship with colour and image.
*text and image?
*collage?
